Positional Language Activity

This term my four year old nanny charge has been learning about positional language at school. He comes home with homework and our mission was to practise using his positional language in his home environment. Positional language is words such as under, over, on top, under, behind, in front inside and outside and so on. Using positional language is important for development as it enhances the ability to follow and give directions and also to use language precisely.

First of all I got my nanny child to watch a video I found on youtube which he loved. I warn you it’s a catchy song and will most probably encourage your child to sing it all day long!

After we watched the video we got his favourite toy and started putting our positional language into practise. We placed doggy ON the stairs…

UNDER the chair…

BEHIND the curtain…

IN FRONT the television…

IN BETWEEN the toys…

When you try this activity make sure you ask your child while your doing it where the toy is placed or better yet ask your child to place the you ‘inside the box’ or ‘on your head’ and see if they understand the instructions. What we enjoyed doing was singing ‘Where’s the doggy?’ while doing this activity. It seemed to help my nanny child stay interested and understand more.

There you have it, a really easy activity you can do from home!

Why don’t you take a look at some of my other educational activities such as colour scavenger hunttreasure baskets or learning and sorting colours.
